SQL Server not disappearing as fast as hoped

March 24, 2005

While there is no question that Oracle beats SQL Server, Oracle 10g and SQL Server are still battling it out in the marketplace.  Most IT managers are still reeling from the 2004 security vulnerabilities and unplanned crashed of their Windows servers, and many are still unwilling to use either Oracle 10g or SQL Server on a Windows platform.

  • SQL Server continues to be haunted because of Windows reliability and vulnerability issues
  • Thousands of applications are delivered to customers with a SQL Server back-end
  • Over half of all large IT shops run an application using SQL Server

Ellison’s brilliant strategy with Oracle 10g effectively pushes Oracle firmly into the departmental database market. Small applications needs simple databases, and the Oracle 10g automation and “simplicity umbrellas” features make the super-powerful Oracle database as easy to manage as a less-flexible departmental product such as MS SQL Server.

In my opinion, one of the main reasons that Microsoft SQL Server has not lost ground to the clearly more powerful Oracle solution is Microsoft’s wholehearted support for their SQL Server User group, the Professional Association of SQL Server (PASS).
