Oracle Open World, London
September 28, 2004
Mark Rittman

I went up to Oracle Open World today, at the ExCeL Centre in London Docklands. It was my first Open World, as before this the annual event in London was solely for Oracle Applications, so wasn't really relevant for what I do. As I couldn't blag a three-day pass in time, I paid for a one-day conference pass and picked today to come up.

Got here just after 9.00 and saw Chuck Rowzat's talk on "Redefining The Data Center". After that, I headed over to the Oracle demogrounds, and had an in-depth look at the new 10g Business Intelligence products coming out, including Analytic Workspace Manager 2 and Oracle Warehouse Builder 10gR2 'Paris'. I have to say that what I saw was pretty impressive, with AWM2 having a complete overhaul - no more distinction between the OLAP Catalog and the Analytic Workspace views, automatic enabling of analytic workspaces for the OLAP API, automatic discovery of suitable relational data sources and subsequent generation of OWB-style mappings, and a generally much more polished look and feel. OWB 'Paris' likewise is a huge improvement over what was already a pretty good ETL tool, with parts of the product completely rewritten and a huge amount of new features. It really does look now as if all the various Oracle OLAP threads - developer tools, query tools, metadata and APIs - are finally coming together now, with a big release of all these new products due towards the end of this year.

If you're not going to be able to make it up to Open World, you can view the keynotes online on Oracle Open World Online, view the photogallery and download the conference presentations.
