Arup Nanda On Populating Summaries Using Advanced Queues
September 27, 2004
Mark Rittman

A couple of interesting papers by Arup Nanda on using Oracle Advanced Queues to populate summary tables. The thinking behind this is that, under some circumstances, the SQL to create a materialized view would be so complex that it wouldn't support fast-refreshing. By using Advanced Queues, you can achieve much the same effect (updating the summary with changed date), but with a greater ability to specify the queries that update the summary.

The first paper, "An Alternative Approach to Summary Table Management Using Advanced Queues" is described as

"This article presents a rather unconventional approach to dealing with the challenges of maintaining summary tables using Advanced Queues. The article covers the basics of Advanced Queues and explains with an example how there are used to maintain a real time data warehouse summary table where the complexity didn't allow for materialized view fast refreshes."

The second paper, "Summary Management Using Advanced Queues" is introduced as:

"Advanced Queues are not just for developers - it could be an extremely valuable tool for real time data warehouses, maintaining flattened denormalized tables and simplifying OLTP complex queries. This session describes the problem of maintaining summary tables using usual triggers approach and how to resolve it it using Advanced Queues. It also describes in detail how to set up an AQ system with code samples. A prior knowledge of AQ is not necessary."
