Retrieving Application Users And Groups Using APEX

March 24, 2004
Mark Rittman

A useful APEX Tip:

If you want to retrieve a list of application users (to populate a drop-down list for example, or a LOV) you can query the WWV_FLOW_USERS view.

This view contains the USER_ID, USER_NAME, FIRST_NAME and LAST_NAME fields (amongst others) which can be used to display the user's details.

In addition, if you want to return the application groups that a user is assigned to, you can use the WWV_FLOW_GROUP_USERS intersection table. For example;

SELECT group_name
FROM   wwv_flow_group_users
WHERE  user_id = (SELECT   user_id
                  FROM     wwv_flow_users
                  WHERE    user_name ='MRITTMAN')

would list out all of the groups that the user 'MRITTMAN' belongs to.

Thanks to Sergio Leunissen (from the APEX team) for that one.
