Roby Sherman On Comparing Oracle On Windows
vs. Linux
Roby
Sherman recently carried out an
interesting performance comparison of Oracle 9i Release 2
running Linux and Windows 2000. According to Roby;
"I recently performed a technical, head-to-head
comparison of Oracle 9i release 2 running under out-of-the-box
versions of Red Hat Linux 7.2 (kernel 2.4.7-10smp) and Windows
2000 Server Edition, on identical Pentium-based hardware. The
goal of these tests was identify the strengths and weaknesses
of each operating system in the areas of database performance,
stability, and ease of administration / support."
Roby's conclusion? Redhat Linux 7.2 is around 38% faster than
Windows 2000 Server when carrying out most Oracle tasks. I
originally came across Roby's article when reading
this comp.databases.oracle.server thread on Windows vs.
Linux performance, which it's also worth taking a look at as
well if you get a chance.
Check out the report for the full test scenario together with
findings in the areas of performance, stability and ease of use.
Whilst you're there, take a look at Roby's excellent "Oracle
Inside Out" page, which contains a wealth of Oracle
technical notes written in an easy to read, informative style.
One to definitely bookmark.
