Details on Oracle10g EM patch apply

March 11, 2004

There's a useful new paper on OTN (via about the automatic patch notification feature in Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g. OEM 10g supports a live connection to MOSC and notifies the DBA about any critical patches that need to be applied to the database, and records and tracks those patches that have been applied.

The paper shows how Oracle10g EM keeps in-touch with MOSC and suggests patches.  The 10g DBA can then automatically schedule the patch application during off-hours.  Hmm, sounds a little scary to me.

It has details on how the 10g Oracle Management Server (OMS) "patch job" stores the patch source into the mgmt_ecm_patch_cache and gmt_ecm_patch_cache tables.  It then describes how EM stages (copies), expands (un-zips) and applies the Oracle patch.

Most exciting of all, Oracle10g EM now interfaces with the Oracle Software Inventory (OSI) component.  Because the patches are stored on the OS, the OSI resides on the OS with a pointer like this:

/var/opt/oracle/oiraInst.loc      (Solaris)
/etc/oracle/oiraInst.loc            (HP/UX and AIX)

For more 10g new features information, you may want Mike Ault's best-selling book Oracle Database 10g new features.  It's 30% off at this link and you get immediate access to the working 10g scripts.
