Oracle 10g Diagnostic Monitor to be extra-cost item

February 12, 2004

From the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group, I was able to speak with some of the developers of the Oracle10g Automatic Database Diagnostic monitor (ADDM, pronounced "Adam").

Pete Sharman of Oracle Corporation noted that Oracle plans to sell the ADDM and SQL Tuning Advisor are add-on "Performance Packs".  This was confirmed by Oracle employees Kyle Hailey and Graham Wood.

Oracle10g users are being informed in the 10g Enterprise Manager (EM) GUI that the ADDM and SQL tuning advisor will be additional cost items.

Further, there is some talk that Oracle DBA's must purchase additional licensing to query the Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) tables (WRH$ and WRI$) to extract recommendation information.

At first blush, this appears to counter Oracle's commitment to using the full suite of Oracle10g automation features to compete with SQL Server in the low-end database market.
