Oracle has Announced the new Application Server 10g
Standard Edition One
Are you developing a J2EE application but are having problems justifying
the expense of the Oracle Application Server 10g? Do you like the
idea of a company portal, but are put off by the effort it takes to
develop and deploy a portal solution? If this describes your
situation, then Oracle may have the produce for you.
Oracle has Announced the new Application Server 10g
Standard Edition One
This is the low cost version of the Application Server, similar to the
Oracle 10g Database Standard Edition One. Starting at $745 (for 5
named users) or $4,995 per processor, this edition of the Application
Server is designed to allow small businesses to build corporate portals,
J2EE applications and web sites.
Although details are not yet posted on OTN and the new edition is not
available for download, it appears that the Standard Edition One will
not have an infrastructure, clustering or Oracle Identity Management.
From the press releases, it also appears that the included portal
(called instant-portal) has predefined capabilities and is an "entry
point to Oracle Application Server Portal. However, Oracle states
that Standard Edition One is a "complete J2EE and Web services
environment."
One new feature is that the installer creates startup and shutdown
scripts.
