Introduction to UNIX - management, architechure, commands
Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

Introduction to UNIX

The UNIX operating system has grown from an obscure OS into one of the dominant computing environments in the world.  During the 1980s UNIX gained increasing popularity over mainframe operating systems as new UNIX servers were delivered to customers desiring cheaper platforms for client-server applications.  Through the 1990s UNIX-based systems became larger and more powerful, and UNIX servers finally became capable of supporting large Oracle databases. As an introduction to UNIX for Oracle this chapter will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to the UNIX architecture

  • Introduction to UNIX Commands

  • Common Oracle UNIX Commands

  • File Management in UNIX

  • Directory Management in UNIX

  • Dissecting complex UNIX Commands

This chapter is designed to give the Oracle DBA a broad, sweeping overview of the basic UNIX commands and how they are used in an Oracle server environment. In later chapters we will drill-down into more complex UNIX commands, but this chapter will deal with the basics.  This chapter will begin with an overview of simple UNIX commands. By combining UNIX commands, the Oracle DBA is able to create sophisticated management tools and effectively manage their Oracle database.

The above is an excerpt from the "Oracle9i UNIX Administration Handbook" by Oracle press, authored by Donald K. Burleson.
