Army Air Corp Wings list
Here is a somewhat comprehensive list of the flight
wings of the United States Army Air Corp up until it became the United
States Air Force.
By WWII, everybody who was involved in areal combat got
some sort of wings to wear to make the ladies hot.
While most of the wings are self-explanatory (pilot,
balloon pilot, navigator, air crew member, observer, technical observer,
gunner, bombardier and flight engineer), some wings were very specialized:
-
Service pilot wings -
Service pilots were engaged throughout WWII in transporting aircraft
from Factories to port facilities or directly to combat theatres. Many
of these pilots were experienced pre war civilian pilots who after
passing exams were commissioned and rated.
-
Liaison pilot -
TLiaison pilots flew tiny "puddle jumper" single engine Piper Cubs to
observe enemy positions.
